Book Review: Helping Children Find their Own Solutions

Insoo Berg co-founder and developer of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) titles this book “Children’s Solution Work”, which suggest that this professional book is written for therapists specializing in children’s therapy. However, the book provides several interventions and techniques that I find effective with all  populations.image
The book is a resource for innovative and creative interventions and techniques that work well with children. She describes ways to: use different scaling questions, ways to encouraging solution talk, ways to tap into and develop strengths, assigning creative homework, work strategically with families, and ways to help children discover strengths and possibilities. Because children may have limited verbal and expressive capabilities the techniques and interventions of this book tap into the child’s imaginative abilities, and love of play and experience.
The techniques are effective with adult populations who often under-use their creative abilities. The crux of Solution work for both adults and children is the tapping into the creative process. Often as therapists we call upon our clients to imagine things differently, or describe things in sensory detail. These act of imagination and sensory perception awaken the creative centers of the brain that often are inaccessible or hidden behind symbolic language. I have found the techniques described by Insoo equally effective in helping adult clients to tap into their creative strengths giving them just what is needed to think outside the box.
The book has a place in my professional library. Still, I do not hesitate to recommend it to parents and teachers looking for ways to help children to express themselves in meaningful and positive ways.

As a Marriage & Family Therapist registered intern, I pull from a wide range of treatment modalities to create a treatment plan that will benefit each individual client. As former teacher I carry with me the desire to teach myself out of a job. So, along with effective individualized treatment, I make it my goal to teach clients to use what they learn in session, where it counts: in their everyday lives.   I see couples, families, children, young adults and teens. I have varied hours of availability, including late afternoons, early mornings at The Inland Integrated Wellness Center.
